Philippe Bigard's first photographic work, Terre froide, takes us to the heart of the Arctic Ocean, in the Svalbard archipelago, also known as Spitzberg. In these isolated lands, it is the immensity of the landscapes and the variety of the fauna that strikes the eye. But it is here above all the feeling of an intimate discovery of this land that one experiences, thanks to a delicate use of black and white.
During one of his travels, the photographer Philippe Bigard discovers the dreamlike landscapes of this "cold coast" (translation from the Norwegian Svalbard) which constitutes the northernmost land of Norway :
"Martensøya, Kvitøya, Vibebukta... These are places that tell us nothing but whose names are very evocative. Between Spiztberg and the North Pole, I wandered for 9 days and crossed as many areas and islands suitable for photography. There, only nature and the traces left by bears give the azimuth.
The sea and the ice gradually merge, then comes the pack ice and the moment when the boat breaks the 82nd parallel north, this latitude at which the sun is visible all day long at the summer solstice, and stays under the horizon all day long at the winter solstice."
Philippe Bigard's photographs invite us to explore a nature that seems powerful and unspoiled, but which is threatened by global warming.
